Purpose:
The Winneconne Public Library is committed to providing a safe and welcoming environment for all patrons, including children. This policy outlines the responsibilities of caregivers regarding the supervision of children in the library.
Policy:
- Supervision Requirements:
- Children under the age of 9 must be supervised by a responsible caregiver at all times while in the library.
- Caregivers are expected to remain within sight and sound of the child and provide appropriate supervision to ensure their safety and well-being.
- A caregiver, as defined by this policy, is an individual aged 11 years or older who is responsible for assisting and supervising a minor or person in need of support while in the library. The caregiver must ensure the safety, well-being, and appropriate behavior of the person in their care during their visit.
- Unattended Children:
- Children aged 9 and older may use library facilities independently; however, caregivers are still encouraged to remain nearby.
- The library staff is not responsible for the supervision of unattended children.
- Emergency Situations:
- In the event that a child is left unattended, library staff will attempt to contact the caregiver. If the caregiver cannot be reached, staff will follow emergency procedures to ensure the child’s safety.
- Behavior Expectations:
- All children, regardless of age, are expected to follow the library’s Patron Responsibilities and Conduct. Disruptive behavior may result in a request for the caregiver to provide supervision or remove the child from the library.
- Library Programs:
- For library-sponsored programs, specific supervision guidelines will be communicated to caregivers prior to the event. Caregivers must ensure that children are accompanied as required.
- Conclusion:
- The Winneconne Public Library aims to create a positive environment for all patrons. By adhering to this policy, caregivers can help ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for children and all library visitors.
