Overview: The Desk Clerk is a crucial position responsible for providing excellent customer service and support at the library’s front desk. This role requires an organized individual who can manage circulation tasks, assist patrons, and ensure the smooth operation of library services.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Greet and assist patrons with a friendly, professional demeanor, ensuring a welcoming atmosphere at the library.
  • Manage circulation tasks, including checking materials in and out, processing returns, and handling fines or fees.
  • Answer inquiries from patrons regarding library services, programs, and resources, providing accurate information and assistance.
  • Assist with the shelving of returned materials, maintaining organization and accessibility in the library.
  • Process new materials and enter them into the catalog, ensuring accurate record-keeping and easy accessibility for patrons.
  • Collaborate with library staff to promote programs and events, helping to create promotional materials as needed.
  • Maintain organized records and documentation related to circulation and library services.
  • Uphold the highest standards of cleanliness and safety at the front desk and surrounding areas.
  • Assist in opening and closing procedures for the library, ensuring all systems are operational and secure.

Qualifications:

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with a focus on customer service.
  • Experience in library services or customer service is preferred, but not necessary.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize effectively in a busy environment.
  • Proficiency in office software and or computers.
  • Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Flexibility with staff schedules to accommodate library needs and events.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform movements such as bending, twisting, reaching, grabbing, and stretching as needed to assist patrons and manage the workspace.
  • Capability to push and maneuver a heavy book truck, weighing up to 300 pounds, for transporting materials throughout the facility.
  • Ability to lift red boxes weighing up to 40 pounds for fulfillment duties.
  • Good hearing and vision abilities to communicate effectively with patrons and ensure safety in the library.
